Meta: Facebook owner fined €1.2bn for mishandling data
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has been fined a record-breaking €1.2 billion by Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) for mishandling data transfers between Europe and the United States.
The penalty, imposed under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), highlights concerns over the use of standard contractual clauses (SCCs) and potential exposure to weaker US privacy laws.
Meta plans to appeal the ruling, calling it unjustified.
Meanwhile, privacy groups welcome the decision, but experts believe the fine may not bring significant changes to Meta’s privacy practices.
The case follows a decade-long battle initiated by privacy campaigner Max Schrems, seeking to protect EU citizens’ data.

China tells tech manufacturers to stop using Micron chips, stepping up feud with United States
China’s government has escalated its technology and security feud with the United States by urging users to refrain from buying products from Micron Technology Inc., the largest U.S. memory chipmaker.
The Cyberspace Administration of China cited “serious network security risks” in Micron’s products that allegedly pose threats to national security and China’s information infrastructure. The statement lacks specific details about the identified risks.
The agency directed critical information infrastructure operators to stop acquiring Micron goods. This action coincides with efforts by the United States, Europe, and Japan to limit Chinese access to advanced chipmaking technology due to worries about potential weaponization.
While Chinese officials have issued warnings about the repercussions, they confront difficulties in retaliating without damaging China’s smartphone manufacturers and other industries. The conflict raises the potential of technology decoupling and further stresses already fragile US-Chinese relations.
WhatsApp Rolls Out Edit Message Feature, Allows to Modify Text Up to 15 Minutes After Being Sent
Ever sent a message only to realize that there’s a typo or wrong info in it? Bummer, right?
Well, WhatsApp peeps know how stressful that is, and with that, they added a new feature in the app that allows users to edit their sent text messages within 15 minutes of delivery.
Done with the beta testing, the feature is now available to global users on Android, iOS, and the web interface.
Mark Zuckerberg, the head of Meta (formerly Facebook), announced the update, highlighting how it simplifies correcting mistakes without deleting the entire message.
To edit a sent text, users need to long-press the message and select the “edit” option from the menu. Edited messages will be labeled with an “edited” tag, indicating modifications.
WhatsApp emphasizes that the editing capability is protected by end-to-end encryption and enables users to rectify errors or provide additional context without rewriting the entire message.
Google’s latest step into AI-powered advertising: Integrating ads into its conversational generative AI
Google announced during Google Marketing Live 2023 that it will integrate Search and Shopping ads directly into its Search Generative Experience (SGE), a new conversational AI chat interface.
Paid advertisements will be seamlessly blended with search results, clearly marked with a prominent “Sponsored” label.
The company plans to test personalized ad formats within the SGE space, leveraging generative AI to enhance the user journey.
Currently, there is no opt-out option for these ads.
This move signifies a significant departure from Google’s traditional ad placements, as ads will now be embedded within informal chats.
While the integration presents opportunities for personalized customer engagement and potential revenue growth, the impact on click-through rates (CTR) remains to be seen.
